Abstract

The experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of Pueraria mirifica (PM) on wound healing and productive performance of growing-finishing pigs. The two continuous eperimental perilds were studied. In the first period, 24 of 21 - day weanling castrated Large White-Landrace pigs were allotted randomly by PM level (10,20 g/head), and antiseptic wound treat status into 6 treatments; treatment 1, 10 g/head PM. + antiseptic; treatment 2, 20 g/head PM + antiseptic; treatment 3,10 g/head PM; treatment 4,20 g/head PM; treatment 5,0 g/head PM + antiseptic; treatment 6,0 g/head PM. The data of wound healing period, ADG,FCR and hematological status were recorded. Results showed that PM supplemented pigs took a 3-day shorter wound healing period than the no-PM supplemtnted pigs (P<0.05). The PM pigs (10,20 g/head) improved growth performance (ADG,FCR) significantly (P<0.05) whereas the hematological variables were not affected. In the second period, 20 of 39-day castrated pigs were allotted randomly by period of wound healing (WH/day) and PM level (0,500 ppm) to 4 treatment; treatment 1, WH>7 days+ 500 ppm PM; reatment 2, WH<7 days + 0 ppm PM; treatment 3, WH>7 day + 500 ppm PM; treatment 4, WH>7 days + 0 ppm PM. The data of ADG, FCR, hematological status and carcass characteristics were examined from 39-149 day of the experiment . Results showed that ADG and FCR of WH<7 day were better than those of WH>7 day. After withdrawal for 14 days, pigs fed with 500 ppm improved ADG, FCR but decreased the cortisone level. Pigs fed with 500 ppm had higher preslaughter weight, hot carcass weight and hepatic weight. The WH>7 days and 0 ppm PM fed group showed the lowest figure of LEA, Longissimus, psoas major and hepatic weight. After 14-day withdrawal, phytoestrogen residue was found limited in the acceptable range in all treatment groups
